The Cold Outside, Hot Inside Dilemma: Winter Workout Outfit Edition – Abigail Nora

Or, how to stay warm on your way to a fitness class that’s going to be hot and sweaty inside.

I am not one of those people who has motivation to work out on her own, so my fitness routine is almost exclusively made up of group fitness classes. And my favorite classes tend to get sweaty, because my favorite classes are things like SoulCycle, hot yoga and Barry’s Bootcamp. Getting dressed for class is super easy in the summertime, and in spring and fall I basically just throw a light jacket on over my tank and leggings.

Winter, however, is another story. You don’t want to freeze your butt off on the way to class. Or, I don’t know, maybe you do… DIY cryotherapy? But you definitely don’t want to sweat to death before you’re even through with the warm up.

The trick? Layering. I know, I know, it’s hardly earth-shattering. But it works! Here are my four favorite layering tricks for winter workout classes:

  1. Layer over your leggings: Moisture-wicking leggings aren’t always the warmest option to get to and from the studio. Throw some cozy socks, leg warmers, or even a pair of sweatpants on over them to help this issue.
  2. Multiple jackets: I’ve been known to pile on a crew neck sweatshirt, Lululemon define jacket and a puffer coat over my tank top when it’s really really cold. If it’s freezing but not “oh-my-god-why-am-I-leaving-the-house” freezing, one layer (either the jacket or the sweatshirt) is usually enough with my coat.
  3. Change your footwear: If you’re going to a class like Barry’s Bootcamp where you wear your own shoes, they’re not going to want you trekking in slush and snow from outside. So toss your sneakers in your bag and wear snow boots, Uggs or other warm footwear on your way to class.
  4. Style your hair so you can wear a hat, or get earmuffs or a headwrap that you can wear over a ponytail. Because a cold head is a sad head. I just made that up, but it sounds valid.
