Morning Workout Tips: How to Crush It Like the Boss Babe You Are

Sometimes, I get randomly inspired to work out at 6:00 or 7:00. In the morning. “You will be so full of energy!” I tell myself as I excitedly book the class.

Which is true… I usually feel pretty great all day afterwards. But of course, the hardest part of working out bright and early is actually getting my butt out of bed. Once I’m in class, the endorphins kick in and I feel empowered to take on whatever the day has in store.

Granted, it really, really, really helps when I prep enough to make the process of getting from my apartment to class, and then from class to work, as smooth as possible. I still haven’t quite mastered the locker-room-get-ready, but here’s how I get from bed to morning workout (and still have time to snooze! well, one snooze anyway):

PREP THE NIGHT BEFORE

Literally, this is key. Do as much as possible before you go to bed so your groggy pre-6am self doesn’t have to deal with it.

For instance, I know some people sleep in their workout clothes, but I just can’t get into that. I do, however, grab my fitness gear of choice and set it all out the night before so I’m not wasting precious morning time trying to decide which of my seven black tank tops I want to wear to class. (No, but really.) I lay everything out for easy access, right down to my socks and sports bra.

I’ll also do as much breakfast prep as possible the night before. Let’s be real, I never wake up in time to actually eat breakfast, so I’ll usually eat a banana or blend something to drink en route to class. My newest favorite is this maca mocha coffee drink. Coffee + banana = the perfect morning workout combo. To save precious snooze time in the morning, I add all the dry ingredients to my blender the night before and set the timer on my automatic coffee maker. Then all I have to do in the morning is add the liquid, frozen banana and blend!

I will also prepare a glass of lemon water and set it by my bed to drink upon waking up. Think about it: you haven’t had any water for however many hours you’ve been asleep, and hydration is key.

And, of course, I make sure my bag (this, in black) is all packed and ready to go, which brings us to…

PACK YOUR {GYM} BAGS

I pack my work/gym bag the night before with:

  1. Outfit of choice, which honestly probably takes me the longest to pick out because I am super indecisive. I try to consider both a) what I feel like wearing and b) what won’t suck to put on post-shower, in a locker room. Jeans and tights are difficult. Good options include dresses and loose trousers.
  2. My getting-ready gear. I always have a basic makeup stash in my bag, which includes Glossier’s Perfecting Skin Tint, Boy Brow and Balm Dot Com, as well as an eyelash curler (Surratt’s Relevee is seriously the best), mascara (usually L’Oreal Voluminous), an eyeliner pencil and highlighter. Right now I’m loving Hourglass’s Ambient Lighting Palette. I use the darkest shade as a super light bronzer and mix the two lighter shades to set everything. And it’s all packed in a Glossier pink pouch, natch.
  3. My water bottle, because otherwise I will forget it. And who wants to pay $2-3 for water at the studio?

SOUND THE ALARM + PUMP UP THE JAMS

I read a tip somewhere to label your alarms in fun, motivating ways that will actually get you out the door, and then to also set an alarm for when you have to leave your apartment. So, on mornings I work out, I set three alarms:

  1. One to wake up, fifteen minutes before I actually have to do so (labeled “Yes, I can!”)
  2. One to get out of bed, for real this time (labeled “Yes, I will!”)
  3. One to leave the house! (labeled “Yes, I am doing it!”)

Cheesy maybe, but effective. I also play energizing music while I get ready, like my “Endorphins Make You Happy” playlist.

TREAT YO SELF

And, of course, depending on where I work out and how much time I have before work, I like to reward myself post-exercise. If Real Good Juice Co. is nearby, I love the Fly Girl smoothie. If I am swinging by Starbucks on my way to work, I’ll grab a Triple Venti Nonfat Caramel Macchiato (two shots stopped being enough a long time ago) and the new vegetarian sous vide egg bites with red pepper. They’re so tasty and packed with protein!
