A Week of Workouts + Chicago ClassPass Picks – Abigail Nora

Ever since I joined ClassPass, I have been searching for the perfect mix of fitness classes to take weekly. Generally, celebrity trainers seem to recommend a mix of strength training (think barre, pilates) bookended by high intensity cardio sessions (like indoor cycling), plus a yoga session or two for active recovery.

I still haven’t found my own perfect mix, and this is probably partly because there’s so much I want to try, from class formats to favorite instructors to go back to. Throw in ever-changing weekly themes at places like Flywheel and Studio Three, and I doubt I’ll ever truly settle on a weekly workout routine … but that’s okay because isn’t variety the spice of life? And also, you know, not getting completely bored by your workout routine.

So, every Sunday, I take a look at the upcoming week on ClassPass, my schedule, and any theme classes I want to take, and plan my workouts. It’s probably one of the few routines I consistently stick to, actually. Right now, I am on the ClassPass core plan, which allows for 10 classes per month. I plan to supplement those classes so I can work out at least three times per week, which also allows me to splurge on SoulCycle classes that aren’t on ClassPass. However, I’ll have to look at how much I spend on those supplemental classes and see if it makes sense to switch back to Unlimited… I even have expensive taste in fitness, it’s a real problem.

ANYWAY, here’s a look at my planned workouts for the upcoming week, featuring a mix of old favorites and new-to-me fitness class experiences:

MONDAY: FlyBarre 60 with Glenn
I like to start my week strong (literally) with a bodyweight-based strength class like pilates or barre. Glenn and Elena are my favorite FlyBarre instructors, so I take their classes whenever I get a chance. I love the original FlyBarre 60 format because it has a nice stretching section in the middle.

TUESDAY: Rest Day
Unless feeding and playing with my sister’s cat Dobby counts as exercise. I mean, he’s an energetic kitten, but I don’t think it does.

WEDNESDAY: Flywheel EXPLICIT RIDE with Jeremy
Hi, my name is Abby, and I use up my Flywheel studio visits on Classpass super quickly every cycle! I think Jeremy might have been my second Flywheel instructor ever, and he remains one of my favorites to this day. I’ve taken an explicit class before, and the instructor played one of my all-time favorite Kanye songs, so I’m excited to see what Jeremy has in store. Sometimes exercise is just way better with swearing, you know?

THURSDAY: Pilates ProWorks with Ryan
I’ve tried reformer pilates exactly once before and found it sort of just okay, but I know people who swear by this studio, so I’m giving it another shot. I really want to like pilates, so hopefully this round goes better for me! Otherwise, Pilates ProWorks has a “matbox” pilates/boxing class that looks super interesting, and I’d like to try their take on barre, too.

I’ll do a weekend class on Saturday or Sunday, either CorePower Yoga or a SoulCycle class with Jaclyn. I love her 9:30 a.m. Soul Survivor classes on weekends because a) I still have the whole day ahead of me after class and b) it’s an hour long, which makes spending $30 + shoe rental on a class just slightly less painful.

So that’s my workout-planning routine and what’s on deck for this month…I’d love to know what your fave fitness classes and ways to exercise are, too!
