Dressing for fall is infinitely better than dressing for, well, most other seasons. Summer clothes are boring, and for most Chicagoans, winter clothes are hidden under layers of practical parkas. Fall has fun layers though… and those few, glorious days where the weather is just right and you can basically wear whatever you want.

So, in celebration of the season, here are five staple, classic fall pieces that are the perfect foundation for any autumnal ensemble.

One. A great bag

Whether crossbody or tote, fall is the perfect time to swap out or update your bag. Think leathers, suedes, classic blacks and rich, deep hues.

Two. OTK boots

Wear them with skirts and dresses, or over a pair of leggings or jeans. Either way, boots are an essential fall footwear option.

Three. Chunky knits

Cozy sweaters were made for cooler weather. Literally. They’re practical AND cute!

Four. Leather jacket

Okay, so, I’ve been known to wear leather practically all year round, except maybe in the heart of summer. But the crisp, cool temperatures of fall are ideal for topping off your ensemble with a leather jacket. Heck, even the weird rainy fall days we’ve been having in Chicago are great leather jacket weather.

I prefer faux leather versions since they tend to be cheaper, but this is a true wardrobe staple and definitely something worth splurging on if you have the funds.

Five. Something leopard

What, like I was going to leave the namesake of this blog off the list? Scarves, shoes, or even statement coats, leopard feels like an especially fall-ish print.

Bonus: you could totally wear all of these items together. In fact, I probably have on more than one occasion. Let me know: what’s your favorite season to dress for?
