It certainly feels like spring here in Chicago, but everyone needs a weekend at home every now and again. Plus it’s supposed to get chilly again tomorrow! So, for your next night in, adapt some of the Danish principles of hygge and get super cozy.
But wait… WTF is hygge, even? Well for one thing, it’s pronounced hooga, like hooga hooga, I’m never going out again! Hygge is a quality, really, and I like to think of it as coziness personified. Winter is definitely the hygge-iest season: it’s all about tea and nubby knits and candles and cashmere throws, etc etc etc.
Basically, the Danish have turned staying in — alone or with friends — into a true art form. Because it seems like everything is better in Scandinavia, doesn’t it? Anyway, here are some essentials to get your own hygge on:
The ambiance
Candles candles candles! And throws!
The outfit
Cozy sweaters, soft sweats and slippers.
The entertainment
Cue up a Netflix favorite (Gilmore Girls is a super hygge show) or curl up with a good book.
The sustenance
Coffee? Tea? Cocoa? You definitely want something warm and cozy to sip while enjoying your hygge.
