April 3, 2017 // career· life

April is sort of tricky, weather wise… “April showers bring May flowers” and all that. But in between those rainy days, April will tease us with warmer weather and bursts of sunshine and other optimistic reminders of spring in the air. These books are perfect for your April reading list no matter the weather. Curl up inside on a rainy day with one, or enjoy on the sunny patio of a coffee shop. Either way, it works!

Literally, though, I have either checked out or placed a hold on every single one of these titles…

The Handmaid’s Tale

110% worth reading before the Hulu series debuts this month, Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel is more timely than ever. Set in a near-future where the United States government has been overthrown by a totalitarian theocracy, it’s at once engrossing, biting satire and an important reminder. The first three episodes of the Hulu series will debut April 26; in the meantime, here’s a fantastic New York Times piece by Margaret Atwood on The Handmaid’s Tale’s relevance today.

Two Turns from Zero

Remember that episode of Sex and the City where Charlotte was looking in the self-help section of the bookstore, but it was full of pathetic crying people? Well, I feel like we’ve done a total 180 and self help isn’t nearly as embarrassing anymore. Everyone’s pretty cool with “woo woo” stuff now…look at the success of You Are a Badass! Point being: my next three book picks are all some form of self-help, technically, and that’s a-okay with me. Because who doesn’t want to be better?

The first is Stacey Griffith’s Two Turns from Zero, which is ostensibly a health and fitness-focused book. However, it also seems like it’s part memoir and part “how to find your purpose and live life to the fullest”-focused, too. Or, as Stacey herself puts it, “It’s every answer to every question you’ve had about, can I do it?” And yes, she’s a crazy-famous SoulCycle instructor.

Boss Bitch

Nicole Lapin, author of Rich Bitch, is back with a 12-step plan to take charge of your career. Boss Bitch is less about being a literal boss (though Nicole does cover that), and more about shaping your own career goals and success. That could mean starting your own business, or thinking like an entrepreneur in a more traditional “corporate” career, or just being the boss of your own life.

You Are a Badass at Making Money

Jen Sincero’s follow-up to her #1 New York Times Bestselling book You Are a Badass will be on shelves April 18, and it will, apparently, help you become a not-broke badass. Which sounds very exciting to me…and I loved You Are a Badass, so I’m excited to see what else Jen has in store!

What are you reading this month? Let me know in the comments!
