An Editor’s Glam Rental Bathroom
Elaine Welteroth is, simply put, cool. She’s the editor-in-chief of Teen Vogue (the first black woman to hold the position!) and has an impressive resume of beauty editor gigs at pubs like Glamour and Ebony. So it’s only logical that her apartment is as stylish as she is, and basically features a master class in how to decorate a rental bathroom.
Last year, Elaine enlisted the help of designer and blogger Nicole Gibbons to help revamp her tiny West Village studio, including the bathroom. The result is elegance with an edge, thanks to a graphic black and white photo of Kate Moss…. those dramatic, dark walls probably help, too.
Nicole and Elaine have done an amazing job customizing a space that is super similar to a lot of rental bathrooms (including my own!) It has a lot of standard small apartment features, like a tiny layout, tiles halfway up the wall and a regular old medicine cabinet. I’m not sure if I am bold enough to paint my bathroom walls black (it seems like a lot of effort to re-paint at lease end), but I really, really love the effect here.
Other swaps that are more easily attainable for the average renter? Swap out your hardware — Elaine went for chic gold knobs — and carefully select decorative accessories that complement the room without taking up too much valuable storage space, like the shower curtain and fresh flowers. It helps when your beauty products can serve as decor in and of themselves, too. See more of Elaine’s chic-to-death bathroom below:
