Can I let you in on a little secret?

I haven’t made any “real,” big, concrete New Year’s resolutions yet.

But you know what? I’m not that worried about it. Because I know there are a lot of things I would like to accomplish this year. I have big goals, yes, but I don’t think it’s the end of the world if I don’t call them “resolutions” per se.

A lot of people don’t like the idea of resolutions, because you can grow and change and improve literally any time of year. It’s not exclusive to January 1. And resolutions don’t necessarily have to mean changing or fixing yourself…who says you need fixing anyway? My favorite SoulCycle instructor, Jaclyn, touched on this in class a couple weeks ago. She recommended doing something you love, and more of what you enjoy, instead. For her, that was seeing one show per month in 2016. I think it’s a pretty awesome way to approach resolutions, instead of omg I’m so lazy I need to go to the gym more or whatever. Maybe you want to travel once per month, even if it’s just a weekend road trip. It doesn’t have to be a monthly thing, either, but I really like the idea of focusing on what makes you happy as a resolution.

I think, this year, I might take a slightly different approach, sort of inspired by the monthly thing. I have big goals and big dreams, but instead of setting one giant, all-encompassing, overwhelming resolution, I’m going to break it down into smaller monthly goals. They say it takes a month to form a habit, plus breaking down goals into manageable chunks makes you a thousand percent more likely to achieve them. Or something like that, anyway. (;

So, I think my January goals will focus on exactly that: goals. Setting my intentions for the year, creating a vision board (something I have been very curious about and want to try) and generally trying to get a better grip on what the heck I actually want to do with my life. February might focus on being more of a morning person and waking up on time. Not hitting snooze, getting in more morning workouts, etc etc. Another month might focus on budgeting…maybe do a spending freeze or diet or whatever you want to call it for a week… while another month will be all about growing A Little Leopard. I’m excited to jump in and try this approach! Now I just have to decide what to focus on each month…but then I guess that’s part of January’s goal-setting goal, isn’t it?
