INTERIOR CRUSH: ECLECTIC MINIMALISM IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

One of my 2017 goals/resolutions/etc is to refine and streamline my decor style. I’ve accumulated a lot of knick-knacks and random items, but I’ve found I tend to prefer a more minimal vibe…much like the one in Ashley Merrill’s Southern California home.

Ashley is the founder of luxe modern sleepwear brand Lunya, and lives in Santa Monica with her family. The house perfectly encapsulates Southern California-style cool with some whimsical, personal touches throughout.

“I tend to pull elements I like from different trends: a little regency wall motif, a mid-century table, a Danish chandelier, or a Moroccan mirror,” Ashley told Lonny Magazine. “When I’m not married to one look I find them to be more enduring.”

Take a peek at Ashley’s minimal-yet-family-friendly space below:

The formal living room isn’t all that formal, as evidenced by the cheeky painting pictured above.

The family room proves that gray can be cozy. Ashley found the horse print on Etsy and loved it so much, she requested an enlarged version from the photographer.

The intricate railings are Ashley’s least favorite part of the house (!), but I personally love the juxtaposition they provide with the rest of the home’s casual-cool vibe.

The kitchen dining area is flooded with natural light, perfect for sunny mornings with the family.

The Star Wars pop art piece in the formal living area might be my favorite part of the house…and Ashley created it herself.

“I painted this after a Liam Brazier Storm Trooper picture,” she explains. “I loved the abstract Star Wars interpretation and my husband is a fan so I painted our own version for the living room.”

Although…that master bedroom does look super cozy. But would you expect any less of someone who founded a sleepwear brand?

Can you believe this little corner is in Ashley’s daughter’s room? Her kids officially have cooler rooms than I do. (The puppy helps too.)

So, how does Ashley manage to maintain such a cool space while keeping it family-friendly? “I try to find materials that are kid friendly so I’m not stressed out all the time: hide rugs, zinc tables. This way they wear well with the kids and I’m not fighting the realities of my life stage on a daily basis.”

What do you think? Are you a fan of the slightly eclectic, minimal California vibe of Ashley’s home?
