Since officially moving to Chicago, I’ve been itching to play tourist in my own city and hit up some of the major attractions and museums. Well, I packed this weekend full of that and visited the Shedd Aquarium, Museum of Science and Industry and Museum of Contemporary Art in the span of two days.

First up: The Shedd Aquarium, mostly to visit the otters. While Luna has yet to make her official debut, they’re still the cutest things there. My sister Hannah and I actually ended up here after an unsuccessful attempt to see Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives at The Museum of Science and Industry on Saturday – luckily, Sunday tickets were available so we scooped up some of those and Hannah agreed to come back.

I’ve always thought of myself as a planner, but apparently when it comes to museum exhibits I’m just a complete procrastinator. This weekend was the last for both Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives and David Bowie Is at the Museum of Contemporary Art. I’m glad I got to see them both, but in the future… sooner rather than later.

I lined up outside the MCA a little after 8:30 a.m. Sunday; David Bowie is one of very few things in this world that will get me out of bed that early on a weekend. After about a two-hour wait – half of it outside in the snow and the cold – I had tickets for the last time slot: 6:30 p.m.

The exhibit was so worth it. Both the Disney and Bowie exhibits were, for very different reasons (and attracted very different crowds). I guess it’s fitting I saw both, though, since Walt Disney and David Bowie are both pioneers who left undeniable marks on pop culture and their respective fields. If you are ever in a position and have a chance to see either of these exhibits, do not hesitate. Go!

Visiting museums like these can get expensive in a city like Chicago, but it’s possible to save in a couple of ways. Many museums have free days (usually for Illinois residents), Chicago resident discounts, military discounts or student discounts. The Local Tourist has a great list of free days.

Or you can do what Hannah and I did at the Shedd (also works at MCA, The Art Institute of Chicago and sometimes The Field Museum): Museums on Us from Bank of America. Any Bank of America cardholder – even debit cards! – gets complimentary admission to specific museums the first full weekend of the month. It’s a great benefit not many people know about!
